HI, ladies!!
It is Wednesday, September 24, 2008, today, and rather cool in the morning.
Plum, welcome back to Nagoya, and I’m happy to hear that your lecture meeting in Kumamoto was a success with a lot of audience, and that there you had a fantastic encounter with woman who impacted your book heavily. Your smile on the photo is so beautiful, isn’t it? You must be relieved now.
Today’s topic:
Japan’s declining birth rate-is this a national crisis?
These days Japan’s birth rate has declined for a long time, and many people are afraid of this situation as a national crisis. I think, however, it is natural for a highly developed country to become a matured society with fewer children. We should consider the situation as a chance for change.
Firstly, we will be able to live in wider space on this narrow land. Since Japan’s economic has grown well, we have a right to enjoy more comfortable residence.
Secondly, as labor force declines, we can utilize women and foreign people effectively. Japanese companies have been reluctant to hire them, who have the ability to work well.
Thirdly, more and more women have hesitated to give birth, because they have been awakened to the stern realities of mother’s life. We should think of society comfortable for children and mothers, as well as for the socially disadvantaged people.
In conclusion, it is an old-fashioned way of thinking to be concerned about shrinking numbers of people. We should take a chance for the future, using our brains to utilize a lot of human resources. (183)
…Is this an intriguing issue for us, isn’t it?
Well, see you later. Bye for now!

Hi, ladies,
I had a wonderful time at Cosmos's. Cosmos, thank you so much for all the preparations and considerations. I'd also like to say thank you for everyone who attended. Without being with you, I had no way to learn that much. I found Miyake's essay more familier than before, thanks to Alice's writings.
This morning, the lowest temperature was 17℃, so it was a little chilly. Please take care not to take cold.
Hi, ladies!
Cherry talked about Japan’s declining birth rate and said that it is a phenomenon in developed countries. I agree with her opinion. Declining birthrate doesn’t seem a national crisis. On the contrary, I think it might be an unintentional wisdom of human.
Please look back over the population composition of the past. High birth rate and high death rate of babies were common. Not all new born babies could grow up those days. In addition, the average life span of the day was far shorter than now. The demographics, however, have totally changed. People can enjoy longer life, thanks to developing medical technology and affluent circumstances. If the birth rate was the same as the past, considering that almost all babies would be brought up well, while more and more the people live longer, I wonder if we could coexist in peace in such expanded population. I worry about food shortage rather than labor shortage. Ok, I’ll end today’s comment, saying only one reason. Good night everybody!
Hi, ladies!!!
Soon after I came back from Kumamoto, I realized that I had a touch of a cold and a slight fever. I took some tablets for reducing a fever and now my cold is almost gone, I believe. It is getting cooler at the nighttime and, perhaps, I caught cold during the night since I normally keep my window half open.
Two days ago I saw Ms. Kyu, which is a Taiwanese lecturer at Gakusen Uni. and with whom I shared my office while I was teaching at the university. She knew that Jonathan was gone back to Hawaii. At the moment all his classes for the fall semester were being taught by another American teacher who is in the Department of Economics, I was told.
I told her that we lost our discussion group leader, who is, of course, Jonathan, and Ms. Kyu said that she knew a couple of native speakers of English who teach at Aichi Uni. and Nagoya Foreign Languages Uni. respectively. She also said that she could enquire whether they could be available for our discussion sessions. I promised her to send her a couple of copies of Essays 2007. If both or either of them gets some interest in our group activities, they/he might come to our meeting to help us improve our English.
It is a small problem, but Ms. Kyu said that both of them were in the 30s. They are, probably, too young, you may say. If I get some news from Ms. Kyu, I will let you know.
Well, I will go back to work, my lovely friends. I hope all of you are having a delightful time, and I am looking forward to seeing you all on Sunday, October 5. Have fun!!! Bye for now...
Hi Cherry and Ladies,
Plum, welcome back to Nagoya and congratulations on your presentation in Kumamoto. I’m sorry to hear that you aren’t feeling well now. You must have been very tired and might have a cold. It is getting cooler and cooler these days and sometimes the temperature in the morning and night and that of the daytime are big difference. So, please take a good care.
The other day, I went to see the movie “Nim’s Island” played by Jodie Foster, Abigail Breslin and Gerard Butler. This is a very funny, heartwarming, fantasy adventure movie. I laughed aloud many times and felt very relax. I’m a fan of Jodie Foster and she played a very comical character in this movie that is a new field for her. I really enjoyed watching her acting and I thought she must have enjoyed herself in this role.
Moreover, I was enchanted with Abigail’s performance. She, nominated as Academy Award for the best supporting actress last year, is only twelve years olds now. She was just fantastic and natural! If you have daughters about her age and take them to see this movie, they would be enchanted by her.
If things have been too hectic and you need relaxation, this is worth to watch. Just sit back and ease the tension in your shoulders and laugh.
Please take care in this turn of the season, my precious friends.
Good night.
