Beiou kairan jikki 2

HI, ladies!!

Yesterday I finally finished reading the book beiou kairan jikki 2, which took longer than I expected. It was really hard to come to the end due to those old Japanese, but I’m now relieved that their long journey in USA and England was over. I was always surprised by a lot of trivial things the author wrote in it, but it must show his great tenacity of purpose in that turbulent age. Anyway, I thank you for letting us know this interesting book, Plum.

By chance, TV drama atsuhime also ended peacefully, and I found that story very touching, probably because I’m learning the Meiji era for our essay writing. Most impressive line of atsuhime, is “This is the only path in life women can take”(?), which can show her resolution and firmness as a woman even in such patriarchic Edo era.

I haven’t decided the whole composition of my essay yet. It will take a long time…

So, I’m going to tackle the plan! See you next!

Hello, Cherry,Plum and my dear friends.

Today I sent an e-mail to Bev to ask her to give a lecture about research essays to us. She favorably and swiftly replied me, which made me happy and excited.

Here is her reply. I'd like to post both of ours.

Hello, Bev.

Time has flown so quickly that Christmastime is just around the corner.

It is five years since the first volume of 2003 essay was published by NWSRG. It's so exciting to keep producing essays for five years in a row.

Now we are ready to start to write 2008 essays, planning to finish it up by Februaryin 2009. I really appreciate your kind, friendly and thoughtful support and proofreading to help complete the collection of essays.

It will mark the 6th anniversary, if we have published 6th volume of our essays. To commemorate the 6th anniversary of the 2008 essay , we’re planning to invite and ask you to give a speech about a “research essay” in May or July at Dr. Aoyama’s lounge. I fully understand that you’re involved in your work and lots of activities, but we all would appreciate it if you accept our invitation. The possible days would be 10th, 24th, 31st of May and 14th of July. I wonder which would be better for you in the morning or in the afternoon? You could deside your available time.

The other day we gathered at lounge at Aoyama’s where we brainstormed and report essay goals for each other. We had a group discussion over the essay projects from 10:30 to 3:00, taking a break for lunch and tea.
After giving us a lot of advice after reporting our essay project, Dr. Aoyama remarked that our essay is a “research essay”. Figures will work as a positive evidence to prove the idea.

Suddenly the word of “research essay” caught my attention.
My essay writing seems to be far from it. I used a number of second sources about Takeko Kujo but not “first resources” with exception her letters and a book she wrote. I realized what we are demanded is to collect first sources to support our ideas. I'd like to know more details about reserch essays.

By the way, my private life is going to be excited in the next year. My daughter’s family will be returning on the 15th of December. She’ll have a second baby in next March, while my son will become a father next January. Yes, I’ll be blessed with two grandchildren and a role of a granny will be waiting for me.
At the same time, I have a strong desire to finish up my next paper by next February, managing all those baby-sitting and household duties during January and February.

In the end, it’s really a great surprise for me that it is only I that to keep writing papers for five straight years. I'd like to continue this record.

I’m looking forward to your favorable reply.

With the best wishes,
Keiko Watanabe

Dear Keiko,

Lovely to hear from you as the year starts to wane. Time flies! And congratulations on continuing to write for five years -- and on being a granny again!!

I'd be happy to give a talk on research essays. I think 31 May probably works and I would prefer early afternoon. I hope that suits everyone's schedule.

In haste so this must be short

Hello, ladies.

It’s Wednesday. This morning I called Plum to report her about Bev’s acceptance of invitation.
We're looking forward to seeing her next May.

I have one problem to solve.

I’d like to show Bev how to get to Plum’s by indicating the proper direction using an arrow on the map, but I don’t know how to do it. It’s beyond my technological knowledge of PC.

Could you help me draw an arrow on the map I copied from the Chizumaru?

Here is the correspondence between
Bev and me.

Hello, Bev.

How delighted to hear of your quick and approving response!
I made the gleeful news posted on Cherry’s blog( for our communication ), making contact with Aoyama sensei about the time.

Now let me tell you the schedule on Ma 31(Sun.)

We’re planning on having the lecture meeting from one to three at Aoyama’s.

I tried to attach a map but I failed. I'm sorry but
I could tell you cleverly how to get there, if necessary.
You’ll be able to park the car but the road is narrow.

With kind regards,
Keiko Watanabe
