MJ forever

HI, ladies!

Welcome back, Gloriosa!
I hope your condition has been much better.

Thank you for your quick response, Cosmos.
I’ll give an answer soon.

Today I’ll write about Michael Jackson’s die. (chigasaki method & TIME)

International pop superstar Michael Jackson died at his home on June 25, at the age of 50. After the investigation, the L.A. Police Department declared his death a homicide, saying criminal charges will be brought against the physician who administered the drugs that day. An investigator said a laundry list of drugs stopped Jackson’s heart, and that the physician also neglected to dial 911; Jackson’s bodyguard placed the call.

…Pop singer Madonna (both are the icons of pop music in 80s!) said the world has lost one of its greatest performers and that his music will live on forever.

See you, have a good evening.

Hello, Cherry and my precious friends.

Today five members got together to discuss critical thinking at Cosmos'. In the morning we reveiwed what Bev said in the seminar about how to write a report essay. In the afternoon each of us talked how to write an essay using that critical perspective.

Now let me tell you about one article which drew my attention from NHK World.

The oldest elephant named Umeko has died at a Zoo in Odawara. She was estimated to be 62 years old- the equivalent of 100 human years. She came from Thailand in 1950. Tables for laying flowers and registering visitors's names were set up in fron of her pen.

May she rest in peace!

Hi, Cherry and my dear friends!

We have now long holidays called “Silver Week”. Are you enjoying the new holiday’s season? To tell the truth, it has come too late for my family. My husband is enjoying his life after retirement and I was relieved from preparing lunch boxes. Even though, holidays are holidays! I feel something relaxing.
Cherry, you wrote about Michael Jackson, didn’t you? Recently his home-doctor has been indicted because of wrong treatment, dosing a lot of drugs. I suppose he surely needed to calm his symptom and his pain mentally and physically.
He had excellent talent and a superstar loved by the world. In spite of such a great position, he pursued one thing, which he would never acquire in this world, a race of the White. I can’ understand his endless desire to become a white man. He should have a pride of himself as a black artist. He was so charmed that the white and the black were crazy for him. Why? Why? Racial discrimination has been tattooed so deeply in human brains. It may be very difficult to erase from our society just like tattoos. Hearing his death, I really sympathized with him.
Good night, everybody. Though I have a lot of things still now, I’ like to watch TV drama “Shirasu Jiro”. I wish you a wonderful silver week and sound sleep. Good night!

Dear Cherry and friends

Hello. How have you been spending this Silver Week?

Yesterday morning, I listened to Michael sensei's lecture. We met for the first time in one month. He was fine.

Last time, I wrote about his first lecture here. Today, I am going to write about his second lecture. He taught me about Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) and John Locke (1632-1704).

Both Hobbes and Locke are 17th-century political philosophers. They thought how nations and government should be. As I wrote about the social atmosphere of the seventeenth century, English people were experiencing “the world upside down”. Various kinds of dissenters appeared in those days. In 1649, King Charles I was executed.

Both Hobbes and Locke thought how primitive people lived. The question was how people were in the natural state. Unlike dissenters who idealized primitive life, Hobbes thought that it would be horrible. From his point of view, "life is poor, nasty, brutish, and short." His idea about politics was reflecting such an attitude. He wrote the book, Leviathan. Leviathan is a gigantic creature like a whale, which is a metaphor for a country. Since it is a creature, it must have a head that controls the body. The head would be a king for a country. He thought people were selfish. He insisted that the self-interest of the government would match the self-interest of people. There should be a strong authoritative government; otherwise, the world is chaotic. He was born in the 16th century and it was the Elizabethan age. She realized relatively stable reign and a strong state. Hobbes idealized the age of Good Queen Bess.

Locke also had a rosy memory of Elizabethan time. He had the same question as Hobbes. How were people in the beginning? His answer was that people had liberty and everyone was equal. He thought about rights. According to him, we have at least three rights. First, we have a right to have property. Secondly, we have a right to contract or to make agreement. Thirdly, we have a right of reparation and restraint, which means that I am free as long as I don’t disturb somebody’s freedom.

His idea about the government was based on the views on human rights and equality. While Hobbes suggested the totalitarian government, Locke insisted the government should protect people's freedom and equality and govern the country effectively. To realize an effective government, he suggested a separation of powers, that is, the separation of executives and legislatures.

Locke's suggestion was quite influential among Western countries. I will review it next time.

Have a good day.

Hi, ladies!!!

How have you been, my precious friends?

Thank you so much for your concerns about my cold and bronchitis.

Now, I think, I have completely recovered from my illness, which was so nasty and persistent.

I have a good appetite and I really feel that I am well and fit.

I found an interesting article on the BEL website, so I made a quiz. Hope you enjoy this article quiz.

Yoji, who came back from Sydney on Sep. 10, is now cooking dinner in my kitchen. He is a great chef, as I told you many, many times so far.
I just cannot wait for tonight’s dinner.

Bye for now, my precious friends.

Mary Queen of Scots' last letter

Summary
18 September 2009
The last letter written by Mary Queen of Scots hours before her execution has gone on public display in Edinburgh this week. It is on show for just seven days and could then be locked away for a generation to prevent it from being damaged.

Reporter:
Colin Blane

Report
Mary's life was (1) dizzying mix of romance and revenge. She was Queen of Scots, briefly Queen of France and aspired to be Queen of England too. She was sentenced to death for plotting against her cousin Queen Elizabeth. She wrote - in French – (2) final letter to the King of France:

Royal brother, having by God's will for my sins, I think, thrown myself into the power of the Queen my cousin, I have finally been condemned to death by her and her estates. Tonight, after dinner, I have been advised of my sentence. I am to be executed like a criminal at eight in the morning.

Six hours later Mary was beheaded. (3) Director of Collections at (4) National Library of Scotland, Kate Newton, says her last letter was remarkable:

Kate Newton: 'If you look at (5) handwriting it seems very composed, very calm. She goes through reasserting her Catholic faith, reasserting her right to (6) English crown, but she's also looking at her servants and making (7) arrangements for them to have their wages paid after her execution, so it's really extraordinary that she was able to think about that, as well as everything else, in view of her impending execution only a few hours later.'

(8) Mary Queen of Scots' letter is in a glass case, it's about A4 size. The interesting thing is that it's quite gloomy in (9) room because of (10) fear that too much light could cause the ink on the letter to fade away.

Mary was 45 when she died but her line, like her letter, survived. The Stuarts endured for another hundred years.
