The price of tuna

HI, ladies!

Sunflower, thank you for your summary account of TIME article, good help for me.
I heard few days ago that the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) decided that the total annual catch would be limited by 40 percent, and thus the price of tuna would rise in Japan…

By the way, do you know the movie about dolphin fishing in Japan? It is the subject about our eating habits. I’ll write about it next. See you, Bye!

Hi, ladies!!!

I hope you are having a great time.

A professor in the Department of English Literature at Doshisha University in Kyoto asked us, NWSRG, to write a biological essay on Yae Niijima when Ms. Fujisawa, Ms. Yamamoto and I visited the university, the other day, to see the Niijima Yae Exhibit held on campus. To my joy, Ms. Fujisawa said on the spot that she would write it. Great, isn’t it?

Ms. Yamamoto was asked to be a visiting professor and teach the English literature students how to translate popular fiction, but she turned down the offer, stating that she would like to concentrate on her profession rather than come down to Kyoto to teach university students. Hmmmm, that’s understandable.

I met Ms. Yamamoto for the first time in the early 1990s through a literary translation school, and since then we have been corresponding in one way or the other. As you are well aware, she is a famous professional in English-Japanese literary translation, especially in the genre of mystery novel translation. But actually she is a very warm-hearted, caring and gentle lady. (She lost her husband more than ten years ago, and since then she has been a widow.) Most importantly, she knows how to be successful in life. Of course, she works hard, much harder than any person I know, but never asks other people to work as hard as her, unlike me… (I tend to expect other people, including my students and friends, to work harder than me(!?). Sorry about that.)

Hard workers do not necessarily get what they want to get, although they surely deserve that. Life in this world is full of contradictions, isn’t it? That’s the reason people tend to hope for the other world.

We had a beautiful lunch at a restaurant next to Yasaka Shrine, which was flashy and worldly, to my regret, and I recommend you to try that restaurant when you visit Kyoto.

Goodnight to you all, my precious friends.

Hi, ladies!!!

It has been a bit cloudy and windy today, but the air is crisp and clear, to my joy, very refreshing.

I have been preparing an English composition exercise booklet. Also I am planning to hold an English composition seminar at TCLC on March 3, 2010.

The duration of the seminar is 3 hours from 10:30 to 2:00 with a lunch break from 12:00 to 12:30. The seminar fee is 4000 yen and an exercise booklet will be sold at 1000 yen. If you are interested in this seminar, please contact TCLC.

I am also holding the same seminar at the university on March 10, but the seminar at TCLC would be convenient to you in terms of public transportation.

I intend to make two more exercise booklets on English composition for Japanese English learners who have advanced English writing skills like you, my precious friends, and hold a seminar that is similar to the one scheduled on March 3, in summer or in spring 2011.

I sincerely hope more and more Japanese English learners enjoy English writing.

Writing is very helpful to organizing our ideas and thoughts. In addition, we often find it easier to express our logic in writing that in speaking. Do you agree with me, my precious friends?

Hope you are having a fantastic time. Goodbye to you, ladies.

Hi, ladies,

It was a beautiful autumn day today. I went to a DIY and bought a heater for tropical fish my DH bought through the Internet. The heater is controled around 24℃.
They are new families. I was happy to see him pleased.

I asked Lenley what he is specialized about his counry. He said that he is sepecial about king and queen. I guess he can tell about James, Elizabeth・・・so on.

I asked him if he wants to learn Japanese, in what way does he want to be taught. He said he wants to be taught through Japanese. So for him it is good to talk in Japanese.
He has a cool i phone and sometimes he asked me to put the mail into English. Some are from ladies and he asked me if their mails are an invitation or just information. It seems hard for him to judge these kinds of mails.

Have a nice weekend!!

Hello Cherry and my precious friends.

Cosmos and I got together for brainstorming how we write our 2009essays.

She told me that she’s going to visit Toyama to research the local newspaper which reported how rice riots in Uozu in Toyama Prefecture broke out and how it triggered other rice riots one after another across Japan. Working women in fishing villages were powerful and energetic enough to provoke those riots. The media was in favor of their demonstrations, reporting the news nationwide.

I told Cosmos that I was so curious how Uemura Shoen, a woman in the Meiji period, managed to take a top position of the Japanese painting circles.

To say nothing of her artistic talent and strenuous efforts, her upbringing partly attributed to her great accomplishments. She was born in a family of only one parent, which helped her to take the course of paiting. To become a professional painter would be not a desirable option for a girl.

I'd like to depict how she cleverly took advantage of her adverse opportunities through her life.

We promised to write more than a few sentences until we meet next month.

Have a good night sleep, my friends.

Hi, ladies!!!

How did you spend the day today, my precious friends?

One of my students, who could not make it at the speech presentation held at the university library in October due to her parental responsibility achieved at her son’s elementary school.

Nonetheless, she said she would like to write a speech script just for exercise, and sent me part of it. Her writing skills are not so bad, and her argument in her scrip, sort of, made me chuckle. I just want you to share my enjoyable experience. Perhaps, you will chuckle over it. Oh, dear, dear…

Medical expenditures for young children and the aged are paid by taxpayers. Parents who have children or the aged can, without any worry about their medical cost, go to the doctors, but I don’t think this free medical service is good. Because this service tends to encourage parents with young children and the aged to go to the doctors without reserve whenever they feel they need medical attention day or night, although the patients' health condition is not so critical or serious. In other words, they tend to abuse the service.

Consequently the doctors are often forced to conduct unnecessary medical tests for these patients who are lawfully eligible to complain about their health condition and prescribe more and more medicine, which might not be required otherwise. I think this free medical service should be reviewed and some restrictions should be introduced to prevent these medical abusers to overuse this service.

I also argue that the provision of free high school education is not necessitated. It is true that destitute families have a serious financial difficulty sending their children to high school. Therefore, free high school education should be restricted to youngsters whose parents are proved to be “destitute”. It is important to classify the household income and draw a line somewhere. It is needless to say that these youths should have strong intentions to study at high school in the most earnest manner, without skipping classes.

I am deeply concerned that with the introduction of free high school education more and more students might cut classes and fool around, day after day: they will not feel guilty about not going to school because they think that their parents do not have to work hard to send them to school.

Even now, we often see a number of students skipping classes and spending time at game centers or other amusement places and female students roaming the shopping streets, being dressed up, mostly overdressed up, and wearing flashy make-up, often with long eyelashes and curly wigs. In addition, with the provision of free education, I seriously worry, the degree of students’ absence from school will escalate and lead to a higher crime rate among teens.

Hi, ladies!!!

How are you today, my precious friends?

Do you like hospital dramas? Some are crazy about them and never miss any episode, I have heard recently.

This is a piece of news about hospital dramas produced in the UK. I am sure you will find it very intriguing and informative.

'Inappropriate' hospital dramas criticized

Summary
18 November 2009

A leading hospital manager in the UK has strongly criticised the way that doctors and nurses are portrayed in TV soap operas depicting life in the National Health Service.

Reporter:
Adam Brimelow

Report
Antony Sumara is (1) renowned NHS troubleshooter. He took over at Mid-Staffordshire earlier this year after (2) health service regulator exposed appalling failings in care. He's now working with patients' groups and staff to rebuild (3) trust.

But he's exasperated over (4) way health workers are portrayed in (5) programmes like Holby City and Casualty. In (6) article for the BBC website Scrubbing Up series, he says (7) staff are shown regularly flirting and gossiping while treating patients; eating, drinking and smoking while on duty; and failing to promote good hygiene.

He acknowledges that viewers aren't naive and can separate (8) fact from (9) fiction, but he says these programmes should reflect a real hospital rather than what he calls (10) 'very blurred reality'.

In response the BBC says the programme makers consult medical experts and take great care to portray medical issues responsibly.

Hi, ladies!!!

The weather is tremendously pleasant and lovely today. It has been warm, exceptionally warm for late November, and I can hear a number of birds, of whose names I do not have the lightest idea, singing in the shrine’s back garden, where I cut my finger the other day.

Last Tuesday my TCLC members came to my place to watch a UK detective drama. I asked them to write a movie review for the purpose of writing practice and none of them said no to my request. So, it was good, wasn’t it? The duration of the drama is 90 minutes and most of them have no multiple region DVD players, which means that all of them had to come to my place to watch it.

It appears that all of them quite enjoyed watching the DVD, whether they perfectly understood the story or not. For all the difficult terms concerning police investigation, the DVD is fairly well produced and pretty entertaining. The phraseology of police officers is something we have to overcome, but it takes time, as you are well aware.

This is BBC’s news about the ending of Oprah’s show in 2011, which I still cannot believe. Enjoy the quiz, my precious friends.

Oprah's show to end

Summary
23 November 2009

The iconic American talk show host, Oprah Winfrey, is to stop doing her globally famous show in September 2011, after 25 years on the air.

Reporter:
Richard Lister

Report
The Oprah Winfrey Show began in 1986 and is now broadcast in 140 countries. With its confessional atmosphere and Ms Winfrey's candour about her troubled childhood and her weight and relationship problems, it's redefined (1) talk show genre.

It's also made her the wealthiest black woman in the world, and possibly too, the most influential. (2) Maryland University study suggested her support for Barak Obama had been (3) key to his nomination. (4) authors appearing on her programme can become (5) bestsellers overnight.

Oprah is still the highest rated talk show on (6) US television but (7) audiences are half what they were a decade ago. Her empire also includes magazines, (8) radio show and, from next year, (9) television network, so it seems likely her place in (10) American culture will continue.
